likely costs in designing a web site

A web site typically consists of the following things:

Although each site has its own complexity which affects the design costs, we can still indicate the likely costs for a typical brochure web site.

domain name

You can purchase a low cost .uk domain name from 123-reg from just £2.99 plus VAT a year.

Use the search box below to see if the domain name you want for your business is available to buy. Enter the name after the "www." then click on Go.

web hosting

Your web site is a collection of associated files and folders. These files and folders have to be stored on a computer that is accessible by any web browser from any other computer in the world. Web servers are heavy-duty computers that have in-built security and robustness in order to serve up site pages to any web browser.

You, the web site owner, have to purchase a suitable web hosting package to accommodate your web site.

We provide a web hosting service that is both simple to use and reasonably priced - from £50 plus VAT per year - that's less than £1 per week!

site pages

A typical brochure site would probably consist of between 3 and 5 pages, for example, home, about us, contact us, services and/or products pages.

Each page is interconnected with the other site pages by a set of hyperlinks - this is called site navigation. These links could either be across the top or down the left or right hand side of each page.

Each page has a consistent look in terms of layout, colour scheme, site banner - this is called site styling.

The "contact us" page has a simple contact form to make it easy for your site visitor to send you a message together with their telephone number and email address. The visitor's message is sent by the web server to your designated recipient email address.

Our design fee for such a site is likely to be around £500 plus VAT. Our design cost does not include creating and editing your site's page content, though. This is something you still have to do yourself. But, we can provide you with easy to use content management tools to help you with this.

our web design process

Our web site design service for creating a brochure web site is usually made up of these simple steps.

step 1: getting your requirements

We find out from you what you want from your web site, who are your likely visitors, what you want them to do on your site and how you want them to feel about your site. Also, we would want to know who you are competing with, what you like or dislike about their sites.

From the information and feedback you give us, we produce initial sketches of some of the proposed site pages to help you envisage how your site's content will be presented.

You may already have a page layout either provided by a graphic designer or you have done some design work yourself. In which case, this first step is even easier.

step 2: produce quote

Once you have reviewed our sketches and are happy that we have understood your requirements, we produce a quotation for the work involved. Our quotation will include details about the build timescales, costs and our contract.

If you accept our quote, we require your signature on the contract and a 50% down payment before we can start any development work.

step 3: build prototype

We build a small prototype of the new site consisting of 1 or 2 pages and publish it to our development web server. We provide you with a link to this prototype so that you can see what the proposed page layout, site navigation, colour scheme and typography looks like in a web browser.

We use your feedback to make the agreed amendments. Once you are happy with the prototype, this becomes the template for the remaining pages.

step 4: build full site

We build the remaining site pages using the agreed template. We also build in the agreed site functionality (for example, contact form processing).

We publish the site to our development web server for testing. And again, you are encouraged to carry out your own testing on the site.

We review your feedback to see what amendments are needed.

step 5: publish site

Once we're both happy with the testing carried out on the development web server, we invoice you for the outstanding balance of monies. When we have received full payment from you, we do the following:

what happens next?

Now its time for you to add your marketing content to bring your site pages alive and tell the world about your business.

And, once you've got some meaningful and informative content in place on your site's pages, you need to consider how you are going to drive visitors to your site and monitor its traffic and the keywords being used to find it in the search engines.

We recommend that you sign up for a Google account so that you can benefit from Google's free and excellent tools such as Google Analytics and Google Webmaster.

Another useful freebie from Google is their Keyword Tool to help you get ideas for keywords and phrases that you can use in your page content to help improve its position in Google search engine results. No guarantees, though.
